Welcome to Issue No 188 of The Ephemerist. Many ephemerists will agree that seemingly insignificant fragments from the past can be extraordinarily evocative in a way that more formal records cannot. Two examples of this in this issue are Pete Hawkes’ memories of ‘spotting and tracking’ in his home town of Chesham in ‘I-Spy: an age of innocence’, and Ray Bishop’s nostalgic description of the legend from his childhood in ‘Memories of the Silver Arrows, 1934 – 9’. We are thrilled to have an original piece about themes of the current exhibition at the Bodleian, ‘The art of advertising: layers of meaning’. Get there if you can ! These insights, along with our regular columns Notes and Queries, Mrs Pepys and The Ephemera Detective make another unmissable issue. Enjoy! The Editor
